Description
Empower Play (EP) is a therapeutic program developed in response to the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and their families during the Covid-19 pandemic. The program provides a structured and supportive environment for participants to learn and practice emotional regulation strategies and social skills through tabletop role-playing sessions. Developed in collaboration with a team in Alberta, Canada, Empower Play (EP) was designed to address the difficulties in delivering consistent support during the pandemic. It offers both online and in-person sessions, allowing for flexibility based on individual needs and circumstances. EP focuses on helping participants develop social skills and emotional regulation in low-risk social situations. Through guided tabletop role-playing sessions, individuals learn to take perspectives, offer support, and understand others. EP incorporates evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness strategies through Restoration Cards, which provide in-session opportunities to practice and reinforce skills.
